IMC Album Of The Day – “Thankfully” by Gina Roché (2012)
I first came across the music of Gina Roché many years ago while surfing CD Baby for independent jazz/bossa nova music. Her 2001 release DAWNING OF A NEW WAY http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/ginaroche was like a breath of fresh air, featuring Gina’s rich, breezy vocals and precise acoustic guitar work. The production had a refined simplicity to it. The album hit that chill vibe and was still distinctive because of the thoughtfully nuanced performances.
In the years since the first CD, Gina has continued writing and playing live while also enjoying her blossoming family. People like myself waited patiently for more music…
Well, the wait came to an end with the late 2011 arrival of her new collection of songs entitled THANKFULLY. The thread from the previous disc is there but with an even deeper artistic connection to themes within the new compositions. The music contains a candidly sincere beauty and grace that makes the journey the songs take you on one you’ll want to infinitely repeat. The CD’s title track “Thankfully” celebrates the love and devotion of family life and expresses gratitude for something so easily taken for granted. “As I Am” has a great message within the bouncy time signature imploring listeners to “Live true, live strong, be free, make no apology”... The intimate recording of this CD with its upright acoustic bass/drums rhythm section, acoustic piano and nylon string guitar foundation brings a warmth and honesty to the compositions. The track “Choose Love” has that classic bossa nova feel with Gina’s melodic vocals offering an invitation to ecstasy. Other favorites are “Be The Change” featuring a very cool spoken word bridge from LOreal Crisp Seels, the suburban, married w/kids sequel to Peggy Lee’s “Fever” called “Breakfast In Bed” and the plaintive beauty of “Flying”.

The elegant performances throughout THANKFULLY reflect someone who has fully come into her own as an artist. If you love an authentic jazz/bossa sound, you’ll be happy to immerse yourself into this relaxing collection. You can learn more about Gina Roché at www.ginaroche.com and find THANKFULLY at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/ginaroche2 .
